Celebrating 20 years of making music, Melbourne's own The Bamboos have long established themselves as one of the leading soul bands on the planet, spearheading the underground 'deep funk' scene of the early 2000s, and have been crucial in progressing the sound forward ever since. Tru Thoughts marks this milestone with a collectors' gatefold double dinked 7" for Record Store Day, a compilation featuring some of the bands greatest moments on the label, four tracks that never had an original issue on the 7" format. Led by guitarist and main songwriter/producer Lance Ferguson, The Bamboos have recorded nine studio albums, two live albums, twenty-seven singles, and performed countless incendiary shows; all while aiming forward with a genre-defying take on the music, shaking up what it means to be a soul band in 2020. The Bamboos have collaborated with the likes of Aloe Blacc, Lyrics Born, Alice Russell, Ty, Daniel Merriweather, J-Live, Urthboy, Teesy, Dan Sultan, Tim Rogers. The Bamboos were signed to the esteemed UK label Tru Thoughts for seven years between 2005 - 2012. Over five albums for the imprint - such as 'Step It Up' (2006), 'Rawville' (2007), 'Side-Stepper' (2008), '4' (2010), and 'Medicine Man' (2012) - the powerhouse refined and evolved their sound with a progressive approach, evolving from the "retro" label while still retaining the warmth, rawness and soul of their roots. Compiled on The Bamboos - "Twenty Years 2000-2020" are four songs that encapsulate this growth - a fitting companion to The Bamboos 20th anniversary, and a celebration of one of the most beloved, cherished and respected soul/funk bands of the 21st century. Included on the stellar compilation is "I Don't Wanna Stop" featuring Kylie Auldist, a standout hit taken from the band's second album 'Rawville'. Described as "arguably the best funk album of the modern era" by IDJ Magazine, "I Don't Wanna Stop" is also the debut appearance of featured lead-vocalist Kylie Auldist on a Bamboos wax - that would later lead to her joining the band full time. "Kylie's first live performance with The Bamboos was at the celebrated Meredith Music Festival in Victoria" explains Lance, "we did the 4am set and people still talk to me about it to this day". "The Bamboos Theme" is the opening track on 'Rawville', an up-tempo instrumental track that has "a little bit of KPM/Alan Hawkshaw DNA". "On The Sly", with its relentlessly catchy brass hook, was taken from the band's fourth album '4'. The song is accompanied by a particularly audacious heist-themed video with footage of the band playing at Melbourne's The Night Cat: "it's a venue where we got our starts as a 4-piece playing 3 x 45 minute sets of instrumental funk and soul back in 2000," Lance elaborates. "On The Sly" - also from '4' - is stuffed full of old school soul claps and smooth vocals, courtesy of Auldist and King Merc. a figure perpetually shrouded in mystery. "No one has heard or seen from him since", Lance alludes. This collection picks up where the first volume left off, centering mostly on the beginning of the Sir George Martin era. Martin produced seven albums by America and Heritage II focuses in on demos and alternate takes from the Holiday, Hearts, and Hideaway albums from 1974–1976. Hear for the very first time, an unreleased Gerry Beckley song, “Mandy”; demos of songs from Holiday (“What Does It Matter” and “Mad Dog”), outtakes from Hearts (“Simple Life”) and alternate mixes from Hideaway (“Amber Cascades” and “Today’s The Day”). In addition to these gems, there’s a real rarity included herein from 1971, an acoustic instrumental jam by Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek entitled, “Jameroony” lasting nearly 13 minutes. | Gruff Rhys | Don't Welcome The Plague As A Blessing/ The Babelsberg Basement Files | LP | Early in 2016 Ali Chant texted me, asking if I still wanted to record some stuff at his studio - as property developers were about to knock it down. Another creative space bulldozed away for capital gain. Politically it was a shit year. The noise building for the Brexit referendum that would fuck with the future of the young was in full swing. Bowie died, and on the morning of the first recordings I had the worst migraine. I left the building and threw up in the street. I wanted to commit to the lyrics and sing live so I think I was stressed about getting them ready to sing. I had a batch of songs I wanted to record but I didn’t have a record label or any plans of what to do with them. I gathered incredible musicians from my square mile in Cardiff in the van and drove to Bristol. Kliph on drums, Steve on bass and Osian on piano. I sang and played guitar - We recorded live takes for 3 days then I sat on the songs for almost 2 years. Eventually handing them to composer Stephen McNeff to work on orchestral arrangements. I called the album that was mixed by Samur Kouja; Babelsberg - and I’m very happy with it. This album meanwhile is an exploration of how it came to be - and the songs in their raw state. A companion piece rather than the definitive article. Most tracks are similar to the final work except for Selfies in The Sunset which is pre-duet and much longer. At some point it would be great to release the amazing orchestral elements too. Maybe both records could be played at once. In the meantime please enjoy the fruits of Kliph Scurlock’s mixes and demo digging for (Don’t) Welcome The Plague As A Blessing. I’m very grateful to Lisa Jen and Mirain Haf from the band 9 Bach for singing the background vocals. After fronting Minneapolis legends, Titanic Love Affair, from 1994-2001 Bennett was a key member of the band Wilco, often co-writing songs on the band's early releases with Jeff Tweedy. The power struggle was well documented in the Wilco documentary "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" where Bennett was fired as the cameras rolled. The band was working on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" at the time. Bennett immediately teamed up with Burch and The Palace at 4am was released on the same streetdate in 2002 as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Hardcore Wilco fans loved the release and immediately started making comparisons on who was the real 'genius' of Wilco, Bennett vs. Tweedy. Bennett passed away suddenly in 2009 and with the blessings of his family, 10 years after his death, Schoolkids Records has teamed up with Edward Burch to release The Palace at 4am for the first time ever on Vinyl for RSD 2020. Formed in 1981 by principle songwriter, Graeme Downes the band was named after the French poet, Paul Verlaine, same namesake as Televisions Tom Verlaine lifted his stage name. The Verlaines are also one of the pioneers of the cult followed 'Dunedin Sound' which was lifted from the explosion of talent coming out of their hometown of Dunedin, New Zealand throughout the 80's and 90's. Such bands as: The Chills, The Clean, Bailter Space, The Bats, The 3D's and the Straitjacket Fits all came roaring out of this University town. The Verlaines angular sound made them favorites of bands such as: Pavement, R.E.M., Superchunk, Cat Power, The Mountain Goats, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, Lou Barlow and many others. Uncut Magazine suggested that "before the mp3 replaced the flexidisc, the three axes of the international indie-pop underground were Olympia WA, Glasgow, and Dunedin, New Zealand." From 1985 to 2012, The Verlaines have released 11 albums, most of which are on the legendary New Zealand label, Flying Nun. There was a brief period in the early to mid 90's when the band released albums for Slash and Columbia Records, only to go back to Flying Nun for 2012's 'Untimely Mediations.' When heard that Uno was closing up his studio and retiring from the limelight, the band grabbed a last weekend to record a couple songs (they had THREE in various shape of decomposition). A couple days later there were 17 tracks, of which 12 were deemed PERFECT. Celebrating 20 years of making music, Melbourne's own The Bamboos have long established themselves as one of the leading soul bands on the planet, spearheading the underground 'deep funk' scene of the early 2000s, and have been crucial in progressing the sound forward ever since. Tru Thoughts marks this milestone with a collectors' gatefold double dinked 7" for Record Store Day, a compilation featuring some of the bands greatest moments on the label, four tracks that never had an original issue on the 7" format. Led by guitarist and main songwriter/producer Lance Ferguson, The Bamboos have recorded nine studio albums, two live albums, twenty-seven singles, and performed countless incendiary shows; all while aiming forward with a genre-defying take on the music, shaking up what it means to be a soul band in 2020. The Bamboos have collaborated with the likes of Aloe Blacc, Lyrics Born, Alice Russell, Ty, Daniel Merriweather, J-Live, Urthboy, Teesy, Dan Sultan, Tim Rogers. The Bamboos were signed to the esteemed UK label Tru Thoughts for seven years between 2005 - 2012. Pressed at Gotta Groove Records. First-ever vinyl reissue of the 1990 album from Australian indie rock legends The Church! The Arista label sought to build on the success of their 1988 album Starfish by teaming them up again with producer Waddy Wachtel for Gold Afternoon Fix. But the band wanted Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones to produce. Arista prevailed. Then, Marty Willson-Piper’s Rickenbacker 12-string got nicked. So, no 12-string. Then, drummer Richard Ploog left the band at the end of the sessions, to be replaced by Patti Smith drummer Jay Dee Daugherty for the tour. Not optimal circumstances, to say the least…yet, as often happens with these kinds of situations, the band, inspired by all the turmoil, produced another classic. “Metropolis” was the hit, but stick around for the epic album closer “Grind” among other highlights. Housed In A High Gloss Jacket With Each LP Tucked Into A Printed Inner Sleeve Nasir "Nas" Jones' 2001 record Stillmatic was considered a major comeback for the 90s rap icon. It signalled a return to the gritty, urban chaos of his acclaimed debut album, after releasing record after record of gradually more mainstream material, and Nas' return to prominence in the highest echelons of hip-hop. In spite of this newfound critical clout, Stillmatic's release did nothing to squash his then ongoing feud with fellow New Yorker Jay-Z, who had gone so far as to challenge Nas to a pay-per-view rap battle. A challenge Nas rejected, stating "If Jay-Z wants to battle, he should drop his album the same day I do and let the people decide." Nas fans never would get the no-holds barred lyrical battle with Jay-Z many had speculated. What they got instead was one of Nas' most personal and introspective releases to date in 2002. Not long after Stillmatic's release, Nas spent much of his time away from the limelight to tend to his ill mother, who would pass on from breast cancer in 2002. His experiences with his mother's mortality as well as the fallout of his feud with Jay-Z, who continued to produce diss tracks as Nas tended to his mother, would inspire much of the lyrical material on his next record. God's Son was released in December of 2002, and like Stillmatic before it, was subject to major critical acclaim. On God's Son, Nas effectively took the battle-hardened demeanor he had cultivated and tore it down across 14 tracks that were emotionally insular, though still dusted in urban grit, and still finding time to shoot back at Jay-Z's potshots on tracks like "Last Real Nigga Alive" and "Mastermind." Assisting Nas was a slew of top-tier producers like The Alchemist, Eminem, Ron Browz, and Salaam Remi, over samples of James Brown, the Incredible Bongo Band, Fela Kuti, and Beethoven, and guest vocals from Alicia Keys, Kelis, Claudette Ortiz of City High, and even a posthumous 2Pac. | ALESSANDRONI, ALESSANDRO | RITMO DELLINDUSTRIA N. 2 (RSD 2020) | LP | * Record Store Day 2020 Exclusive Release. * LP pressed on black vinyl • Limited to 300 copies At the end of the '60s in Italy - but also abroad, especially in France and England - a very particular trend began to spread, that one known as 'Library music' or 'sonorization': as suggested by its name, those were real music libraries intended for the accompaniment of audiovisual productions such as television programs, advertisements, documentaries and films. Since they were created in total artistic freedom condition, they are often difficult if not impossible to catalog, as they're not anchored to a specific musical genre; this freedom also allowed the authors to compose, sometimes in the most complete anonymity, experimental and avant-garde music, capable of anticipating the sounds that only many years later would have been widespread on a larger scale. Alessandro Alessandroni is mostly known for his unmistakable whistle in Ennio Morricone's soundtracks composed for Sergio Leone's westerns but, in a world where information is easily accessible to many people, still very few people know how vast his discography is, and how many instruments he was able to play. "Ritmo dell'industria N. 2" (Rhythm of the Industry No. 2), released in 1969 in the library music circuit - and therefore nowadays almost impossible to find in its original version if not at a very high price - can be considered Alessandroni's first solo album. The title is misleading, since among the notes of this record the only vague reference to an industrial rhythm is the almost hypnotic repetitiveness of certain music passages which the songs are based upon: the overall feeling is more metropolitan, mysterious, at times dissonant, and it would better suit a police/thriller context rather than an industrial one; however, the charm of these compositions has remained intact to the present day. "Ritmo dell'industria N. 2" is part of a reissues series, made in collaboration with Edizioni Leonardi (Milan, Italy), of extremely rare library music LP's published between late '60s and early '70s, most of which have never been released again until today, and that are finally made available again for collectors and sonorization music lovers |

(RSD 2020) | LP | * Record Store Day 2020 Exclusive Release * First official reissue * LP limited to 500 copies & pressed on 180gm vinyl * Features two bonus tracks & original liner notes from Wim Van Eyle "Chet Baker (1929 – 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter, actor and vocalist that needs little introduction. Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s but his well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety (he was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late ‘70s and '80s). Chet’s career included collaborations with greats such as Elvis Costello, Charlie Parker and Van Morrison. Mr. Baker was the subject of many books and documentaries throughout the decades and he was even portrayed by Ethan Hawke in the 2015 film Born to Be Blue. Chet began his musical career singing in a church choir and his mother said that he had begun to memorize tunes on the radio before he was even given his first instrument. Peers called Baker a natural musician to whom playing came effortlessly. In the early 1950s he was chosen by Charlie Parker for a series of West Coast engagements…shortly after this, his song ""My Funny Valentine"" became a hit and would be associated with Baker for the rest of his career. Mr. Baker (with his quartet) was a regular performer at famous Los Angeles jazz clubs such as The Haig. Chet Baker's quartet released popular albums between 1953 and 1956 and he won reader's polls at Metronome & Down Beat magazine, beating trumpeters Miles Davis and Clifford Brown. In 1956, Pacific Jazz Records released Chet Baker Sings, an album that seriously increased his visibility. During most of the 1960s (before heading to Europe more frequently) Chet recorded music that could be classified as ‘West Coast jazz’ From 1978 until his death in 1988, Chet Baker lived and played almost exclusively in Europe, returning to the U.S. once a year for a few performances. This was Baker's most prolific era as a recording artist. On the album we are presenting you today (Mr.B) you’ll find Dutch recordings (recorded in 1983 & released in 1984). This rare gem of an album is comprised out of tracks written by some of the top jazz composers of all time (Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, David Brubeck,..) and played meticulously by Baker and his all-star line-up trio consisting out of Ricardo Del Fra (Ennio Morricone), John Engels (Toots Thielemans, Dizzy Gillespie) and Michel Graillier (Magma, Steve Grossman). On the bonus tracks you’ll also find a top performance from Philip Catherine (Placebo) on guitar. | BASHO, ROBBIE | SELECTION FROM THE SONGS OF AVATARS | LP | Robbie Basho (1940-1986) is widely regarded as one of the progenitors of what's commonly known today as American Primitive guitar. Growing up in Maryland alongside neo-traditional guitar explorers John Fahey and Max Ochs, Basho's path would take a decidedly different turn, bringing Hindi, Indian, Japanese and Native American musical traditions into his work. His albums for Takoma and Vanguard have left an indelible trail of influence across generations of musicians, from William Ackerman and Pete Townshend to Ben Chasny and William Tyler. Liam Barker first became aware of Basho having purchased Tompkins Square's reissue of Venus in Cancer, released in 2006. This led him on an incredible fact-finding expedition, unraveling the many layers of mystery surrounding Basho's life and death, all deftly compiled and depicted in his documentary film, Voice of the Eagle : The Enigma of Robbie Basho.During the research process, Barker came across a large cache of unheard Basho tapes recorded throughout his career, ranging roughly from 1965-1985. Tompkins Square is set to release Song of the Avatars : The Lost Master Tapes, a 5CD set of previously unreleased material. The label will release a single disc vinyl LP on Record Store Day 2020 as well. LP pressing limited to 1300 for the world Mikal Cronin experienced a creativity boom in late 2018/early 2019, inspired in part by the massive wildfires in Southern California. Forced to evacuate from the Idyllwild cabin where hed been writing songs, Cronin returned to Los Angeles ready to make something. In fact, he recorded two albums: Seeker, released in October 2019, and its electronic counterpart Switched- On Seeker, out April 18, 2020, aka Record Store Day. The idea for Switched-On Seeker, whose title was inspired by a series of early electronic music records by Wendy Carlos playing classical music on an early Moog system, arose from Cronins interest in synths and electronic music, and he set out to rerecord the songs of Seeker track by track using only his voice and a collection of synthesizers and drum machines. Alone in his garage, Cronin made the album with a variety of synths including Arturia DrumBrute, Moog Sub 37, Moog Mother-32, Hohner String Performer, Mellotron, Omnichord, various little Casios, Roland SH-01A, Korg R3, and classic drum machine samples. While the overarching theme of destruction and rebirth unites Seeker and Switched-On Seeker, everything else about these two albums is different. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire…Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer (after Duke Ellington) and received prestigious awards for his career achievements (including a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and an induction into the Music Hall of Fame). Thelonious Monk is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time magazine. Monk was highly regarded by his peers and by critics, but often his music was regarded as too ""difficult"" for more mainstream acceptance. Thelonious Monk's compositions/improvisations feature dissonances with complicated melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano (which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations). Monk was known for a distinct look which included suits, hats, and sunglasses. He was also noted for an idiosyncratic habit during performances: while other musicians continued playing, Monk would stop, stand up, and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano. Thelonious started playing the piano at the age of six and was largely self-taught…at 17, he was playing the church organ, and in his late teens he began to find work playing jazz. In the early to mid-1940s, he was already a house pianist in several Manhattan nightclubs. In 1944 Thelonious Monk made his first studio recordings…and since then he recorded classic albums for labels such as Blue Note (1947-1952), Prestige (1952-1954), Riverside (1955-1961) and Columbia (1962-1968). By the mid-1970s Monk had disappeared from the scene and made only a small number of appearances during the final decade of his life. Thelonious Monk died of a stroke in 1982, leaving us with an unparalleled legacy. In 1963 Monk was at the top of his game. With his steady quartet of veteran collaborators, he had landed himself a new contract with Columbia and recorded 2 milestone albums for them (Monk’s Dream and Criss-Cross). Soon after Thelonious Monk started touring in Europe to promote his freshly recorded material…and he brought his critically acclaimed line-up with him on tour: Charlie Rouse on saxophone, John Ore on double bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. On the album we are presenting you today (Palais Des Beaux-Arts 1963) you’ll find unearthed Belgian concert-recordings from that era. The show consisted of 2 parts…both were recorded by the national Belgian broadcast company BRT/RTB who had the best recording-equipment on the market at the time. The set we unearthed here (the BRT recordings part) consists of tracks from said Columbia albums which have now become omnipresent Jazz standards. Monk took the stage in his unique style with a grey wool Papakha as his hat choice. At that point unseen for the attending crowd…the showman shuffled across the stage, waving his arms as if he was about to lift off. He would take the crowd on a ride they would never forget. It was the first time Thelonious Monk played the prestigious Palais des Beaux-Arts venue in Brussels to an enthusiastic crowd of Belgian Jazz fans. Full house! The quartet delivers their set with true tight mastership (mixed with Monk’s trademark improvisational avant-garde flair) and leaving room for a jaw dropping minute long drum solo mid-set. All this...and as an encore, the famous Monk solo rendition of the classic song Just a Gigolo…make this a must-have for any self-respecting Jazz aficionado. | MAGNETIC SYSTEM | GODZILLA/ESCAPE (RSD 2020) | 7in | * Record Store Day 2020 Exclusive Release. * First ever reissue * 7” pressed on black vinyl & housed in a gatefold jacket • Limited to 300 copies Magnetic System were a sort of supergroup founded in the second half of the ’70s, consisting of three of the greatest Italian composers, musicians, arrangers and producers: Vince Tempera, Franco Bixio and Fabio Frizzi. This wasn’t their only artistic collaboration, but under the name of Magnetic System only a 7-inch had been released in 1977, containing the two tracks “Godzilla” and “Escape”. The first track “Godzilla” is very peculiar, taken from the soundtrack of a rare ’77 movie conceived and realized by director Luigi Cozzi, who was specialized in underground low-cost productions, mainly active in the science fiction field: starting from the 1954 “Gojira” movie, he completely re-edited it by adding new footage, slowing down some sequences and colouring its frames, transforming the original product into something fully acid and psychedelic, that perfectly fit the trio’s music, a space-krautrock lysergic trip exclusively made with keyboards and synthesizers. On the flip side, “Escape”, is a track that was included in the soundtrack of the 1977 films “Operazione Kappa: sparate a vista” (internationally distributed as “Day of Violence”) and “Ecco noi per esempio”: an exciting heavy-funk song with a pulsating bass and futuristic/cosmic synth soundscapes. This 45rpm is today one of the rarest in the entire Cinevox catalogue, and it is officially reissued for the first time ever for the Record Store Day 2020! A beautiful discovery that demonstrates once again that the ’70s never cease to surprise! |

He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire…Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer (after Duke Ellington) and received prestigious awards for his career achievements (including a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and an induction into the Music Hall of Fame). Thelonious Monk is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time magazine. Monk was highly regarded by his peers and by critics, but often his music was regarded as too ""difficult"" for more mainstream acceptance. Thelonious Monk's compositions/improvisations feature dissonances with complicated melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano (which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations). Monk was known for a distinct look which included suits, hats, and sunglasses. He was also noted for an idiosyncratic habit during performances: while other musicians continued playing, Monk would stop, stand up, and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano. Thelonious started playing the piano at the age of six and was largely self-taught…at 17, he was playing the church organ, and in his late teens he began to find work playing jazz. In the early to mid-1940s, he was already a house pianist in several Manhattan nightclubs. In 1944 Thelonious Monk made his first studio recordings…and since then he recorded classic albums for labels such as Blue Note (1947-1952), Prestige (1952-1954), Riverside (1955-1961) and Columbia (1962-1968). By the mid-1970s Monk had disappeared from the scene and made only a small number of appearances during the final decade of his life. Thelonious Monk died of a stroke in 1982, leaving us with an unparalleled legacy. In 1963 Monk was at the top of his game. With his steady quartet of veteran collaborators, he had landed himself a new contract with Columbia and recorded 2 milestone albums for them (Monk’s Dream and Criss-Cross). Soon after Thelonious Monk started touring in Europe to promote his freshly recorded material…and he brought his critically acclaimed line-up with him on tour: Charlie Rouse on saxophone, John Ore on double bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. On the album we are presenting you today (Palais Des Beaux-Arts 1963) you’ll find unearthed Belgian concert-recordings from that era. The show consisted of 2 parts…both were recorded by the national Belgian broadcast company BRT/RTB who had the best recording-equipment on the market at the time. The set we unearthed here (the BRT recordings part) consists of tracks from said Columbia albums which have now become omnipresent Jazz standards. Monk took the stage in his unique style with a grey wool Papakha as his hat choice. At that point unseen for the attending crowd…the showman shuffled across the stage, waving his arms as if he was about to lift off. He would take the crowd on a ride they would never forget. It was the first time Thelonious Monk played the prestigious Palais des Beaux-Arts venue in Brussels to an enthusiastic crowd of Belgian Jazz fans. Full house! The quartet delivers their set with true tight mastership (mixed with Monk’s trademark improvisational avant-garde flair) and leaving room for a jaw dropping minute long drum solo mid-set. All this...and as an encore, the famous Monk solo rendition of the classic song Just a Gigolo…make this a must-have for any self-respecting Jazz aficionado. This release has a mix of those, along with one brand new song, Blue Heart, which he wrote a few months before passing. Quality recordings are scarce and others were sabotaged by off-time clapping, buzzing old amps, and endless stage banter. While we were never polished, never perfect, nor did we get all the lyrics correct, this record is 100% Chuck Mosley, and we think you'll dig it. |

Their early recording sessions produced dozens of experimental songs with challenging lyrics and Mouth Congress was born. Two years later, The Kids in the Halls Bruce McCulloch asked Mouth Congress to open for him at the Rivoli – a club where The Kids in the Hall performed regularly. Utilizing Brian Hiltzs existing band I Want, they performed a memorable set and several months later decided to record a 7-song cassette entitled For People Only. The sessions occurred just five days before Thompson moved to New York City to begin writing the first season of The Kids in the Hall. Aside of various unofficial bootlegs, the muchrevered release has been unavailable for nearly four decades. Almost out of nowhere, the little-known and regarded director Sergio Leone transposes into a western key a film by Akira Kurosawa, and by putting together all the right pieces, adding a bit of intuition, lays down new rules for the 'spaghetti western' genre, giving way to an endless series of imitations. "A Fistful of Dollars" would not have the same impact without the inimitable music written by Ennio Morricone, who had curiously been an old elementary school Leone’s classmate. The main soundtrack themes were chosen from two arrangements that Morricone had already drafted two years earlier; once removed the lyrics and added the unmistakable whistle of Alessandro Alessandroni, the spaghetti-sound was finally complete! The film was an incredible success, and projected Leone, Morricone, and in particular the actor Clint Eastwood into the Olympus of the Great. The soundtrack was released for the first time the following year (1965), along with the one of Sergio Leone's subsequent work "For a Few Dollars More". |

"For a Few Dollars More" is the natural prosecution of that movie, with the addition of a third protagonist - Lee Van Cleef - who joins the already mentioned two actors: a triad that made history, for another masterpiece Sergio Leone's masterpiece. Ennio Morricone's music is equally important. The Maestro here chooses a 'poor' registry, consisting of folk instruments such as ocarina, Jew's harp and chimes, respectively used to accompany the entry stage of the three main actors. But there are, as usual, the contributions of Alessandro Alessandroni and his Cantori Moderni choir, for an incredibly exciting final result. |
| SOUNDTRACK | LAST TANGO IN PARIS - GATO BARBIERI (RSD 2020) | LP | * Record Store Day 2020 Exclusive Release. * Features new artwork * LP pressed on pink vinyl & housed in a gatefold jacket • Limited to 500 copies “Last Tango in Paris” is a 1972 film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci that tells the encounter and the interactions between two perfect strangers who meet by chance in the French capital: a very young Maria Schneider, in a role that made her very famous and that left an indelible mark upon the rest of her career, and the much more mature Marlon Brando, already a world-famous actor at the time. The result was one of the most famous erotic and dramatic films ever, subject of endless censorship and controversy; great works of art are used to that, one might say, and maybe it’s not a coincidence that “Last Tango” is still discussed a lot today. The realization of the film's soundtrack was assigned to Gato Barbieri, a saxophonist born in Argentine who used to frequent the Roman jazz scene already in the ’60s. When it came to composing the music of “Last Tango”, Barbieri was already an established musician, but he called back some of the musicians with whom he had previously played in Rome, creating a 9-element enlarged ensemble; arrangements for the accompanying symphony orchestra had been made by another jazz giant, Oliver Nelson. The union between Barbieri’s music and Bertolucci’s visions was one of the many perfect marriages that made history in the cinema and soundtrack fields. Three main ingredients are blended among the grooves of this memorable score: the tango melodies - of course, the melancholy of the orchestra string instruments and the erotic tension generated by Gato Barbieri's saxophone, thanks to his unique style that could combine energy and feeling like few others in the world. |

Following his own rules again, and working on the film story with Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento, he directed the monumental "Once upon a time in the West", featuring the American actors Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson among others. Each character is strongly stereotyped here, a fact emphasized by the motion picture soundtrack, once again delivered by Ennio Morricone in collaboration with his orchestra and Alessandro “The Whistler” Alessandroni and his Choir, with the addition of the female singer Edda Dell’Orso. The flavor is epic, but also very romantic at some points, since there’s a love story involving Jill, an ex-prostitute, and one of her old lovers, Cheyenne. This is another excellent demonstration that, when it comes to the exquisite blending of images and music, Italians do it better! In a few word, this is another perfect soundtrack for a magnificent movie! |

British space rock band Spectrum is a project led by Sonic Boom aka Pete Kember. As a solo artist, Kember has recorded as Spectrum and E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research), parallel musical projects with recordings under both names occasionally only featuring Kember. ‘Forever Alien’ is the third studio album by Spectrum. It was originally released in1997 by Space Age Records and has long been out of print. After the band's preceding EP moved away from guitar-oriented music and towards electronics, ‘Forever Alien’ furthered this approach as Kember aimed to create a predominately electronic album that sounded organic and analogue in style. The record is dominated by vintage analogue synthesizers. Kember had become fascinated by the synths as he felt they presented him with more musical possibilities than guitars. The resulting album fuses psychedelic music with influences from the 1960s electronic music of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This is what Scotland-based French producer Stalawa has achieved with his limited edition Record Store Day release, Trod on. He’s refashioned a rare Canadian production of the King Tubby inspired Tempo rhythm, Dunne Done, and enlisted gritty-voiced Jamaican dancehall emcee Junior Demus for a haunting, horns-driven track with a hypnotic and unstoppable groove. Stalawa followers will recognise the rhythm, christened Dundee Done, from his Stalawa In East Africa EP project on Glasgow’s Scotch Bonnet Records. Junior Demus is a dancehall talking legend of the early 80s, who took his name from his resemblance to the similarly granite-toned microphone pioneer Nicodemus. Demus’ vocal, with its resolute, Rasta-inspired lyric, was recorded in New York with the help of trumpeter and engineer Mush1. | TAL ROSS | GIANT SHIRLEY (RSD 2020) | 2LP | * Record Store Day 2020 Exclusive Release * First ever vinyl reissue * 2xLP limited to 500 copies & pressed on 180gm vinyl "Of the numerous musicians who have played along with George Clinton in his Parliament/Funkadelic mob, perhaps the most mysterious of them all would be guitarist Tal (aka 'Tawl') Ross. Next to being one of the original Funkadelics, Ross was a vital force (and responsible for many of the rhythms and chords of the early material) on such early classics as ‘Funkadelic’, ‘Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow’, ‘Osmium’ and ‘Maggot Brain’. Tal Ross left the band in 1971 after a shattering encounter with LSD that made him leave the music scene and his New Jersey home altogether. He went to live in a small town in North Carolina, working and playing acoustic guitar. Years went by without any word from Ross … until 1995, when out of nowhere he issued his first solo album: Giant Shirley. This was made possible by Aris Wilson and Peter Wetherbee (former label manager of Bill Laswell’s Axiom Records) who also enlisted an all-star cast of guest musicians to play on the album (including former P-Funk drummer Jerome 'Bigfoot' Brailey & Manu Dibango/Gil Scott-Heron collaborator Aiyb Dieng). The results of Tal's nearly 25-year funk-fermentation are compelling, with a beefy stew of blues, funk, eastern rhythms, psychedelia, percussive textures, and even some rock 'n' roll for good measure. The album's roots lie deep in the Mississippi Delta style of brooding blues. Whereas his former band eventually shed their hard funk for a more accessible sound, Ross surprisingly stays true to Funkadelic’s early style here on ‘Giant Shirley’. Alternating between red hot and cool funk, the album takes the listener on a fantastic journey not witnessed since Clinton and company's early 70s output. This unique album is far from the standard ""shake your whatever"" genericness that the majority of the P-Funk camp had embraced by this point and comes highly recommended for fans of Parliament/Funkadelic (and for 70s psychedelic/funk rock collectors in general). Emerging ten years from a hiatus, it’s a formidable 32 track opus of tangible bliss from the alt-rock heroes. Devised as a book with essays by Kristin Hersh with art by drummer Dave Narcizo, it’s a fractured album about loss, most tracks are short, broken, some are even reprises. Though no other song catapulted onto the national charts like Dyke and the Blazer’s signature “Funky Broadway,” inspired by the South Phoenix road of the same name, regional soul and funk acts picked up steam in the Valley of the Sun as established artists passed through on the way to the West Coast and performers traveled along the bustling Southern California to Texas black corridor.
